Let me preface this post by saying that those who know me know my heart as well as my personality. I am pretty much a straight shooter and can be somewhat outspoken on issues that I feel strongly about, this happens to be one of them. Now, I will be the first to admit that I am a lot closer to being John Belushi’s long lost brother than an activist of any sort, so the idea of me standing on a roadside protesting anything is somewhat far-fetched, but for an instance I sure gave the hiney’s on the highway operation some serious consideration.
What started off as my own personal crusade against Westboro Baptist Church and their sickening message of hate and misrepresentation of Christianity grew beyond my wildest expectations. Before I knew it I had DM’s on Twitter and national press coverage from many reputable publications. But after careful consideration and input from several people within community and beyond I have decided that dignifying Westboro with my presence would just be putting myself on their level, so this evening I called the event off. Apparently at some point they (Westboro) tracked me down as the sole originator of this Animal House-ish endeavor, so I have high hopes they read this post, and my parting message for them…
Everyone is ignoring you…

Jesus definately had a sense of humor, and liked to lampoon the establishment (pulling a coin out of a fish’s mouth to pay silly taxes). Sometimes, however, even he decided silence was the best (or perhaps the only viable) response. When faced with the absurdity of accusations at his trial, Jesus chose to remain silent, and to let the circus speak for itself. It takes a level of maturity and rationality that the Phelps family does not possess to back off from an idea, especially a really clever and well-intentioned one, in deference to the larger goal. Kudos to you.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I could not agree more.
