My raised bed garden in Conway (Central Arkansas) really benefited from the rain we’ve picked up the past few days. I’ve been able to relax my drip irrigation system for the last 2 weeks because we’ve picked up just enough rainfall to keep moisture in place for the plants. I also dropped a pretty good dose of Miracle-Gro on everything last weekend and everything seemed to really respond well.
My tomato plants are looking great, full of blooms and several small tomatoes on each plant. The leaves are all looking lush and green and I’m not seeing any signs of disease or insect damage. My cucumbers are also full of blooms and growing pretty rapidly, I’m having grab the vines a couple of times each day and wrap them around my trellis to keep everything in place. I think we’ve picked about 4 cucumbers already but I suspect next week we will start seeing a lot coming off. My celery is also starting to take off, I noticed that it had almost doubled in size since last weekend. I will probably start cutting some stalks off in the next two or three weeks and if I manage it correctly I will have enough celery to last me all summer. My asparagus has put off a handful of stalks this month, kinda rare compared to previous seasons when it has usually gone to fern about this time of year. I will continue to fertilize and water asparagus all summer so it can continue to build underneath the ground for next season. My sugar kiss melons have also started growing pretty fast, I’ve thinned the population out again this past week and feel good about the way it’s progressing. I know from previous seasons that I have to pour the water and nutrients onto these melons and they will start to yield around July sometime. Lastly, my first season growing brussel sprouts is off to a good start. The plants are continuing to grow upward and the stalks are looking pretty healthy and strong. I’m really anxious to watch this progress through the summer since I’ve never grown them before.
Here are a handful of pictures I snapped this morning…
