Description

The CWA Heavyweight Championship (often referred to as the Unified title during its inception) was a major professional wrestling title created and defended in Jerry Jarrett’s Championship Wrestling Association (CWA), the legendary wrestling promotion based out of Memphis, Tennessee.

It represents a crucial stepping stone in the late-1980s wrestling territory mergers that eventually formed the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship.

How the Title Was Formed

In late 1987, local wrestling territories were trying to band together to survive the national expansion of Vince McMahon’s WWF (now WWE). To solidify a talent partnership, the CWA decided to consolidate its top singles titles.

On December 7, 1987, Jerry “The King” Lawler won a 3-way unification match in Memphis, defeating Jeff Jarrett and Manny Fernandez. This single match unified three separate championships:

  • The AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship (held by Lawler)

  • The NWA Mid-America Heavyweight Championship (held by Jeff Jarrett)

  • The CWA/AWA International Heavyweight Championship (held by Manny Fernandez)

The combination of these belts officially birthed the new CWA Heavyweight Championship.

Evolution and the “Unified World” Title

The CWA title was originally the top prize in the Memphis territory, but its status shifted rapidly due to more unifications:

  • Becoming a true World Title: In May 1988, Jerry Lawler defeated Curt Hennig to win the AWA World Heavyweight Championship. Because Lawler now held both the local CWA title and a recognized national World title, the stakes in Memphis skyrocketed.

  • The USWA Unification: On December 13, 1988, at the SuperClash III pay-per-view, Lawler defeated Kerry Von Erich to win the World Class Wrestling Association (WCWA) World Heavyweight Title.

  • The Shift: This historic match formally unified the AWA and World Class titles, creating the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship.

Once the USWA Unified World Title became the premier, traveling championship for the newly merged United States Wrestling Association (which absorbed the CWA), the original CWA Heavyweight Championship was relegated to “secondary title” status.

The End of the Championship

The CWA title survived for another year as a mid-card championship, held by notable names like Max Pain (Maxx Payne), Sid Vicious, Dutch Mantell, and Black Bart.

In October 1989, Tony Anthony defeated Dustin Rhodes in a tournament final to become the last official champion. Shortly after, in November 1989, the title was permanently retired and replaced by the newly revived USWA Southern Heavyweight Championship.
