Facebook’s 5k Friend Limit…

May 25, 2016 by Cotton Rohrscheib Leave a Comment

facebook-icon-logoThis past week I bumped into something I had no idea I would ever bump into… 5,000 friends. For some reason they have this limit in place that only allows people to have 5k friends w/ their personal profiles. This limit has been in place for a long time and I haven’t seen any updates in the media where they intend to change this policy.

I totally accept the fact that I’m not normal, most people don’t have 5,000 friends (even on social networks), but in my defense I’ve had an online presence for a long time, and over the years I’ve been blessed to have worked with a lot of people and to make a lot of friends. Once I received this message I went on and examined my friends list and purged the ones that I know are deceased, duplicates, etc., and it hasn’t left me a lot of room for future connections.

I did some checking online and even checked w/ a few friends who have hit this threshold before and picked their brains. The only option is to apparently migrate my personal profile to a “page”. For me this just seems so arrogant. I’m not a celebrity, nor am I famous (for any good reasons), unless you consider the whole tornado thing. I just feel like the whole process is forcing me into something that seems arrogant. I’m not that. At least I hope I’m not.

I’ll admit that during some storms in life where we lost our daughter and recently where we’ve been very public about our need for a kidney transplant for my wife I’ve added friends that I personally didn’t know but they at least had 20 mutual friends w/ us and had either friended me or I friended them, and these people are not “real life friends” –but they’ve ridden w/ us through some dark storms and supported us so they are dear to me, and i’m not willing to unfriend them.

All of this to say that in the coming days and weeks I’ll be updating my profile to a page… I’ll be updating everyone along the way, not sure how the process is going to work.
