Moving from Basecamp to Asana…

May 30, 2015 by Cotton Rohrscheib

I’ve always been a fan of Basecamp for project management because it’s cut and dry and very easy to use. It’s only been recently w/ Grainster that I’ve opened my eyes up to another product, Asana, that’s a lot better tool in my opinion. Out of the box Asana is very clean (just like Basecamp) but it’s a little more robust in terms of performance and features. It’s also pretty intuitive, I’d planned on spending an hour or so this next week getting our team up to speed on the basics but they’ve already jumped in this weekend and started collaborating –so there’s a task already knocked off my list.

There are a couple of features that I’d love to see Asana add that they currently don’t have. One is a general documents repository that you could use to store files against a project and not a specific task inside the project. Hopefully they will address that.

Asana also has a lot better app than Basecamp in my opinion. There’s also a third party app called Hill88 Pro that is even better. I think it costs around $5 or so but definitely worth the investment if you are going to be in and out of the office a lot. Another big plus for me is that Asana also connects w/ Google Calendar and iCal. Basecamp did this also but a lot of project management software on the market today doesn’t, and that blows my mind.

Now that we are all on board w/ moving to Asana, I sure wish there was an easy way to bring all of our Basecamp “legacy data” over to Asana w/out manually moving it. Maybe somebody is working on that…
