Transitioning to Mac…

May 17, 2011 by Cotton Rohrscheib 3 Comments

I have admired Steve Jobs and the Apple brand for several years now and last fall I purchased a MacBook Pro so I could start getting used to the Mac environment in hopes of one day transitioning from Windows to Mac for development. While I have really enjoyed the MacBook Pro, I still haven’t gotten away from my PC’s for developing client projects. This past week I made a move that is going to force me to make the transition, I ordered a new 27.5″ iMac, a new MacBook Pro (for my wife), and an iPad. The MacBook Pro and the iMac came in last week and I have been in the process of moving files over for the past few days.

I am really enjoying the iMac, it’s a powerful machine and is extremely comfortable to work on. My biggest drawbacks so far have been software related, I have several applications that run on my Window’s environment that will not run on the Mac, without installing Parallels and I’m not wanting to do that. I’m not talking about a lot of software, primarily 3 or 4 applications. I have done a lot of research and came up with some suitable replacements but haven’t found my comfort zone in these programs just yet. I am really hoping that I can find my comfort zone this week.

Here I am awake at 3am reading blog posst I subscribe to. Well, it is about time! ;). But let first start off by saying, if you are not going to play any games from the Windows world, then I highly recommend Virtual Box – not because it is free. With 8gB of memory (you did get at least 8, right), Virtual Box screams and has some very good features worth looking at. Are you an Ultra Edit fan? They just recently release a Mac version. I like it but it still lack some features. I would to chat more, just give me a hollar.

Transitioning is the process of changing one’s gender presentation to accord with one’s internal sense of one’s gender – the idea of what it means to be a man or woman.
