Cleanup Unused Images in WordPress

November 13, 2013 by Cotton Rohrscheib 1 Comment

wordpress-pluginsI have several real estate clients that we have developed Real Estate CMS solutions for on WordPress, I’m a huge fan of Agentpress, but there’s always been one issue about using WordPress for Real Estate content management that has bothered me. Let’s say an agent posts a listing on his website and sells it a few months later. Granted he’s going to eventually pull that listing down from his website by essentially deleting that post correct? Have you ever stopped to think about what happens to the 20 or so images that were attached to that post?

Long story short, while the post may be gone from the database, the image files continue to live and take up space in your wp-content/uploads/ directory. Now, hopefully you have your uploads setup to organize by month (which makes it easy to look at time stamps and delete old image files –keep in mind this approach isn’t advised because there’s a good chance you can remove images that are still tied to listings this way). Again, this hasn’t been a huge nuisance, I spend about 20 minutes or so each month purging image files for my clients, but this evening I found a really cool plugin called: Cleanup Images that helps in deciding which images in the Media Library you want to delete and then deleting them from both the DB and the directory if you decide to do so. This plugin will search the database for all images in the Media Library and determine whether or not they are in use. They will then be listed. If not used, you will be able to select them in order to delete them.
