I have several clients running WordPress these days, it’s probably my favorite CMS on the scene for a lot of reasons. Here’s one more reason why I love WordPress: The All-New WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin.
When I first read about this plugin I was a little skeptical, especially since the last WordPress Upgrade broke the PodPress Plugin and everyone had to scramble to put hacks and fixes in place for their podcasts to come back online but after looking at the mechanics of the automatic upgrade plugin I am pretty impressed with it.
The upgrade upgrades your wordpress installation by doing the following steps. (Keep in mind that this process can be set to automatically run so you actually don’t have to do anything on your end if you don’t want to, I probably will just to be on the safe side).
- Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
- Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
- Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
- Puts the site in maintenance mode.
- De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
- Upgrades wordpress files.
- Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
- Re-activates the plugins.
I have tried this upgrade plugin on a few of my test installations and on my sandbox server and it seems to work pretty well. It’s definitely going to make life easier for those of us with a whole lot of managed hosting clients, not to mention an added layer of security and peace of mind in case exploit patches are released in the future.
