While purging our closets this weekend I happened upon my collection of neckties. I honestly can’t remember the last time I wore a necktie. As I continued cleaning & organizing my closet I began to ponder the idea of neckties and how it used to be an almost required fashion accessory for men in business and social settings but no one ever really knew why. From a functionality standpoint their original use was rumored to have been for wiping your mouth during meals… I never bought into that idea because some of my nicer ties cost big dollars, and that was 10yrs ago —so I’m not wiping mouth gravy on them! I’ve been in nicer department stores and haberdasheries recently and noticed that much less of their inventory is allocated to neckties because fewer men fancy the idea of tying something around their necks before heading out I guess, haha. In the south most men understand that all they need w/ their sports coat is an eye-popping pocket square (which is functional). I looked around church this Sunday and out of 500+ people there were zero neckties. I thought about selling my ties on marketplace but realized that would just be perpetuating or resurrecting an idea that (a) looks silly, and (b) has just about died forever…
