A few months back I was faced with the reality that my two-seated, Audi TT Roadster Convertible, was no longer a practical automobile. I think it was probably that warning sticker on the side of the drivers door w/ a picture of an infant car seat w/ a red ghostbuster styled circle and cross-mark across it that gave me my first clue. I made the decision to get a new Ford Pickup a few months ago so that we’d have another vehicle that our son could ride in. I decided to just hang on to my Roadster and just park it under the garage because at the time I just couldn’t bring myself to part with it… I love that car.
The last time I drove it I had people walk over and check it out, this is something that happens all the time. The truth of the matter is that I bought the car 10yrs ago this year when I turned 30. Ironically, I’m turning 40 this year and haven’t driven it in months now. I don’t even have 100k miles on the car, and get this, it has a brand new engine because of the timing belt class action lawsuit w/ Audi. I’ve babied that car as much as you can baby an automobile I guess. I’ve never missed a scheduled maintenance on it and the only people that have worked on the car have been Audi Certified Technicians, etc. To have allowed anyone else to service the car would have somehow seemed dirty to me (and it still does today!).
My wife and I went on our first date in that car, and it’s been in it’s fair share of parades over the years as well. I take a lot of ribbing from my partners who like to call it my “barbie car” and that’s been a lot of fun. My mom once got a speeding ticket in it while taking it in to be serviced, I won’t disclose how fast she was going nor where she was at, but I promise you that we still laugh and shake our heads on that one from time to time. I have loved Audi’s since the first time I ever sat in one. I’ve loved them so much that my wife has had two Audi Q7 SUV’s since we’ve been married. They are impeccable automobiles.
So, why am I getting rid of it? Well, the other morning I was headed out to meet someone at Starbucks and as I walked past my TT just sitting there and opened the garage door I noticed a pretty solid sheet of frost on the windshield of my truck. I think that’s when it sunk in. I haven’t driven the car in months, so long the battery is dead on it. It’s got noticeable dust on the seats (something that’s never happened before) and I honestly can’t think of anytime soon that I’m going to be able to take it anywhere. So, I’ve made up my mind…
I’m going to be putting it on the blog here soon as well as Craig’s list so I can hopefully get rid of it quickly, kind of like yanking the band-aid off really fast instead of doing it slowly and experiencing the most agony!! I haven’t figured out what I’m going to let it go for, because honestly in all of my wheeling and dealing over the years, I’ve never sold a car before!! Imagine that. There are some things that I will take into consideration though, I have a brand new engine w/ less than 20k miles on it. I also have a new water pump, etc., because when they replaced the engine for me I went ahead and had them do the works. It’s also loaded down w/ all of the options that are still relevant today, and it’s just got that classic look that doesn’t come around but every so often.
Stay tuned for more info as well as some pics, and if you are interested, don’t hesitate to let me know…
