Hanging with Mark Martin

October 3, 2008 by Cotton Rohrscheib 1 Comment

This past week was pretty cool, Monday morning I showed up early at the Conway Airport to pickup my business partner Stephen and one of our VIP clients, Mark Martin. Yep, that Mark Martin, who a day earlier was speeding 200 mph around the track at Kansas Motor Speedway in the Nextel Cup Series.  I knew for a few days that they were coming into town but we try to keep things like this under wraps for obvious reasons, the last thing we wanted to see was a bunch of NASCAR groupies show up with numbers painted on their chests.

We cruised all through town in Donna’s SUV, with Mark sitting in the backseat. Once we headed right down the middle of UCA’s busy campus and went totally undetected. Here’s the best part, we went to grab at bite to eat at Chilis, one of our busier restaurants in Conway.

We sat at a table located right at the front door. We talked over lunch and for a long time afterwards about his new airplane, an Eclipse 500, and not a person in the restaurant said a word or even recognized him. The manager did a double-take when we walked in but that was about it. It was hilarious, at one point he even walked outside to sit on the bench to take a phone call and we watched as people just breezed right past him, not a person hassled him the entire time.  I thought that was awesome!

For those of you who have wondered what he is like, I can tell you this from the times I have been around him, he is extremely down to Earth, and is a great guy to talk to. We mostly talked about his newest airplane, an Eclipse 500.  Once we finished with lunch I carried them back out to the airport and they headed back to Batesville.
